Lisboa é Grande

Tomás chegou a Lisboa num domingo de março com duas malas, um currículo atualizado e uma confiança que ainda não tinha sido testada. Tinha vinte e seis anos, uma licenciatura em Gestão pela Universidade da Beira Interior, e a certeza tranquila de quem nunca teve de lutar muito para conseguir o que queria. A capital estava ali — barulhenta, enorme, cheia de janelas acesas. Pensou que conseguiria emprego num mês.

Tomás arrived in Lisbon on a Sunday in March with two suitcases, an up-to-date CV, and a confidence that had not yet been tested. He was twenty-six, had a degree in Management from the University of Beira Interior, and the quiet certainty of someone who had never had to struggle much to get what he wanted. The capital was right there — noisy, enormous, full of lit windows. He thought he would manage to find a job within a month.

Ficou no sofá da prima Rita, num apartamento pequeno em Odivelas, com uma janela que dava para um muro de azulejos cor-de-rosa. Durante a primeira semana, enviou trinta e dois e-mails. Depois disso, esperou. O telemóvel ficava quieto, o computador ficava quieto, e Tomás ficava sentado na beira do sofá a olhar para o ecrã como se pudesse conseguir uma resposta à força de vontade. Não conseguiu nenhuma. "É normal no início", disse a Rita uma noite, sem levantar os olhos do livro. "Tens de conseguir pelo menos uma entrevista para começar. O resto vem depois." Tomás tentou não desanimar, mas o silêncio de uma caixa de entrada vazia tem um peso que é difícil de ignorar.

He stayed on his cousin Rita's sofa, in a small apartment in Odivelas, with a window that looked out onto a wall of pink tiles. During the first week, he sent thirty-two emails. After that, he waited. His phone stayed quiet, the computer stayed quiet, and Tomás sat on the edge of the sofa staring at the screen as if he could manage to will a reply into existence. He didn't manage to get a single response. "It's normal at the start," Rita said one evening, without looking up from her book. "You need to manage to get at least one interview to begin. The rest comes after." Tomás tried not to get discouraged, but the silence of an empty inbox has a weight that is hard to ignore.
