When Sofia landed in Lisbon after five years in Amsterdam, the first thing she felt was the heat — a humid, salty warmth that only exists near the Tagus. She felt that her body remembered that air even before her mind recognised it. Her mother was waiting at the airport with a restrained smile. They felt a little awkward at first — five years is a long time for two family members who love each other but have become, in a way, distant from one another.
On the taxi journey home, Sofia looked out of the window and felt a strange mixture of joy and melancholy. She missed Amsterdam, her friends, the routine she had built. But she also felt something she did not know how to name — a kind of relief at being back. Her mother asked how she was feeling. "Fine," said Sofia. But the truth was more complicated: she felt divided between two worlds.
A mãe sorriu e pôs-lhe a mão no ombro.
In the evening, as they had dinner, her mother asked if she felt she had made the right choice to return. Sofia thought for a moment. "I don't know yet," she answered honestly. "But I feel I'm in the right place now." Her mother smiled and put her hand on her shoulder. Sometimes, feeling is enough — you don't need to understand everything straight away.
