A Mão que Ajuda

Mariana começou a ser voluntária na Associação Rua, no Porto, quase por acidente. Uma amiga tinha pedido que a ajudasse numa tarde — apenas uma tarde, estava combinado — e ela ficou. A associação ajudava pessoas sem-abrigo com comida, roupa e acompanhamento social, num armazém convertido na zona do Bonfim, cheiroso a sopa e a detergente. Nas primeiras semanas, Mariana não sabia bem como ajudar. Ficava parada, não sabia o que dizer, sentia que atrapalhava mais do que ajudava. Mas aos poucos aprendeu que a melhor forma de ajudar não é saber as palavras certas — é, muitas vezes, simplesmente estar presente.

Mariana started volunteering at Associação Rua, in Porto, almost by accident. A friend had asked her to help one afternoon — just one afternoon, that was the plan — and she stayed. The association helped homeless people with food, clothing and social support, in a converted warehouse in the Bonfim area, smelling of soup and detergent. In the first few weeks, Mariana did not really know how to help. She stood around, not knowing what to say, feeling like she was getting in the way more than helping. But gradually she learned that the best way to help is not about knowing the right words — it is, very often, simply about being present.

Com o tempo, Mariana ficou conhecida no bairro. As pessoas chamavam-lhe pelo nome e contavam-lhe as suas histórias. Uma senhora chamada Lurdes, que tinha perdido o emprego durante a pandemia, pediu-lhe ajuda para escrever um currículo. Mariana ajudou-a durante três tardes. Quando Lurdes conseguiu o emprego, trouxe um bolo para a associação. "Ajudaste-me mais do que imaginas," disse ela.

Over time, Mariana became known in the neighbourhood. People called her by name and told her their stories. A woman named Lurdes, who had lost her job during the pandemic, asked for her help writing a CV. Mariana helped her for three afternoons. When Lurdes got the job, she brought a cake to the association. "You helped me more than you can imagine," she said.

Ao fim de um ano, Mariana percebeu que o voluntariado a tinha ajudado a ela também — talvez tanto quanto ajudara os outros. Tinha aprendido a ouvir sem pressa, a ser paciente quando a situação pedia paciência, a não julgar antes de perceber. Os seus próprios problemas pareciam mais pequenos quando os via ao lado de histórias como a da Lurdes — não porque fossem menos reais, mas porque agora tinha uma perspetiva diferente, mais larga. Havia uma coisa que não esperava descobrir: que ajudar os outros não é um sacrifício. É uma das formas mais directas de nos ajudarmos a nós próprios.

After a year, Mariana realised that volunteering had helped her too — perhaps as much as it had helped others. She had learned to listen without rushing, to be patient when the situation called for it, not to judge before understanding. Her own problems seemed smaller alongside stories like Lurdes' — not because they were less real, but because she now had a different, wider perspective. There was one thing she had not expected to discover: that helping others is not a sacrifice. It is one of the most direct ways of helping ourselves.
