A Livraria do Bairro

Era uma tarde de novembro — o tipo de tarde em que a chuva cai torta e o vento vira os guarda-chuvas — quando Ana entrou na Livraria Bertrand para se abrigar. Não conhecia bem aquela zona do Chiado; sabia apenas que era o sítio onde os lisboetas vinham há séculos comprar livros e conversar, um lugar que cheirava a papel velho e a madeira encerada. Enquanto se sacudia a água do casaco junto à porta, um funcionário apareceu com uma chávena de chá quente na mão. Ana aceitou, um pouco surpreendida. Não conhecia muitas livrarias onde fizessem isso.

It was a November afternoon — the kind where the rain falls sideways and the wind turns umbrellas inside out — when Ana stepped into the Livraria Bertrand to take shelter. She did not know that part of Chiado very well; she only knew it was where Lisboetas had come for centuries to buy books and chat, a place that smelled of old paper and waxed wood. As she shook the water from her coat near the door, a member of staff appeared with a warm cup of tea in hand. Ana accepted, a little surprised. She did not know many bookshops that did that.

Enquanto folheava os livros de poesia portuguesa, reparou num homem que também lia de pé, encostado a uma estante. Parecia conhecer os livros de cor — pegava neles, abria numa página qualquer e lia sem hesitar. Ana quis perguntar-lhe o que escolhia, mas não sabia se ele queria ser incomodado. Acabou por fazê-lo: perguntou-lhe baixinho se conhecia algum poeta que ela ainda não conhecesse.

As she leafed through Portuguese poetry books, she noticed a man also reading standing up, leaning against a bookshelf. He seemed to know the books by heart — he picked them up, opened them to any page and read without hesitation. Ana wanted to ask him what he was choosing, but did not know if he wanted to be disturbed. She ended up doing it: she quietly asked him if he knew any poet she might not yet know.

O homem sorriu e apresentou-se: chamava-se Diogo e era professor de literatura na Universidade de Lisboa. Conhecia-se com o dono da livraria há vinte anos — vinham ao café ao lado juntos nas tardes de quinta-feira. Ficaram a falar durante uma hora, sentados em cadeiras baixas perto da janela, enquanto a chuva continuava a bater nas montras e os outros clientes passavam entre as estantes. Ana não reparou no tempo a passar. Quando finalmente se levantou para ir, a chuva tinha parado. Tinha na mão três livros que Diogo lhe tinha recomendado — e o número do seu telemóvel, escrito a caneta numa nota de papel. Era estranho conhecer assim uma pessoa. Mas às vezes o Chiado, a chuva e os livros certos fazem esse trabalho por nós.

The man smiled and introduced himself: his name was Diogo and he was a literature professor at the University of Lisbon. He had known the bookshop owner for twenty years — they went to the café next door together on Thursday afternoons. They talked for an hour, sitting in low chairs near the window while the rain continued to beat against the shop windows and other customers moved between the shelves. Ana did not notice the time passing. When she finally stood up to leave, the rain had stopped. She had in her hand three books Diogo had recommended — and his phone number, written in pen on a slip of paper. It was a strange way to get to know someone. But sometimes Chiado, the rain and the right books do that work for us.
