A Casa Nova

Clara vivia no mesmo apartamento em Alvalade há oito anos. Conhecia cada canto, cada vizinho, cada café da rua. Mas quando o senhorio disse que ia converter o apartamento em Alojamento Local, ela teve de mudar-se. Em três semanas encontrou um apartamento no Intendente — um bairro que estava a mudar rapidamente, com restaurantes novos, artistas e muita gente jovem. Era assustador e emocionante ao mesmo tempo.

Clara had lived in the same apartment in Alvalade for eight years. She knew every corner, every neighbour, every café on the street. But when the landlord said he was going to turn the apartment into tourist accommodation, she had to move out. In three weeks she found an apartment in Intendente — a neighbourhood that was changing rapidly, with new restaurants, artists, and lots of young people. It was frightening and exciting at the same time.

No primeiro mês no Intendente, Clara sentiu que tudo tinha mudado demasiado depressa. A nova casa era mais pequena e os sons eram diferentes — à noite ouvia música de países que não sabia nomear. Aos poucos, começou a falar com os vizinhos: uma família do Bangladesh, um designer angolano, uma professora reformada de Lisboa. O bairro mudava, mas também a mudava a ela.

In the first month in Intendente, Clara felt everything had changed too quickly. The new home was smaller and the sounds were different — at night she heard music from countries she could not name. Gradually, she started to talk to her neighbours: a family from Bangladesh, an Angolan designer, a retired teacher from Lisbon. The neighbourhood was changing, but it was also changing her.

Ao fim de seis meses, Clara já não queria mudar. Tinha descoberto uma padaria que abria às seis da manhã, um jardim escondido entre dois edifícios, e uma amizade inesperada com a professora reformada. Mudar pode ser difícil — mas às vezes o que muda para melhor não é apenas a morada.

After six months, Clara no longer wanted to move. She had discovered a bakery that opened at six in the morning, a hidden garden between two buildings, and an unexpected friendship with the retired teacher. Moving can be hard — but sometimes what changes for the better is not just the address.
