European Portuguese uses não as the primary negator. Double negation with nunca, ninguém, nada, and jamais is grammatical and standard, unlike in English.

The primary negator não is placed directly before the conjugated verb or auxiliary.
Não fui ao trabalho ontem.
I did not go to work yesterday.
Double negation is grammatical and standard in Portuguese. When nunca, nada, ninguém, nenhum/a follow the verb, não must also precede it.
Não disse nada a ninguém.
I said nothing to anyone.
Double negation: não + nada + ninguém.
Nunca fui a Espanha.
I have never been to Spain.
Nunca before the verb replaces não — no double negation needed.

When the negative word comes before the verb, não is dropped. When it follows, não must be present. Both orders are correct.
