São oito e meia da manhã na estação Baixa-Chiado. O Tomás está atrasado para o trabalho. Desce as escadas rolantes a correr. São muito compridas. Anda de metro todos os dias. Conhece a estação de olhos fechados. Passa pelas máquinas sem olhar. Não precisa delas.

It's half past eight in the morning at Baixa-Chiado station. Tomás is late for work. He runs down the escalators. They are very long. He takes the metro every day. He knows the station with his eyes closed. He walks past the ticket machines without looking. He doesn't need them.

Mas hoje, numa máquina, está uma turista com uma mala enorme e um livro de português. Ela olha para o ecrã. Olha para o Tomás. — Desculpe... O cartão Viva Viagem... Como funciona? O Tomás está atrasado. Mas ajuda. — É fácil. Primeiro, carregue aqui. O cartão custa cinquenta cêntimos. Depois, carregue o cartão. Depois, passe o cartão na porta. A turista escreve tudo no livro. — Carrego aqui? — Isso!
