O Fim e o Princípio

A Marta e a Sónia eram amigas desde os oito anos. Cresceram juntas em Setúbal, andaram na mesma escola, partilharam os mesmos segredos. Quando tinham vinte e dois anos, foram de férias juntas para o Alentejo, e julgavam que a amizade delas nunca ia acabar. Mas as coisas mudam. As pessoas mudam. E nem todas as amizades duram para sempre.

Marta and Sónia had been friends since they were eight years old. They grew up together in Setúbal, attended the same school, shared the same secrets. When they were twenty-two, they went on holiday together to the Alentejo, and believed that their friendship would never end. But things change. People change. And not all friendships last forever.

O problema começou quando a Marta arranjou um namorado — o Frederico. A Sónia não gostava dele desde o início. Achava que ele era egoísta e que a Marta estava a mudar por causa dele. Começou a dizer isso diretamente. A Marta ficava furiosa. — A nossa amizade vai acabar se continuares assim, Sónia. Não tens o direito de me dizer com quem devo estar.

The problem began when Marta got a boyfriend — Frederico. Sónia had not liked him from the start. She thought he was selfish and that Marta was changing because of him. She began saying this directly. Marta would get furious. — Our friendship is going to end if you keep going like this, Sónia. You have no right to tell me who I should be with.

Numa tarde de outubro, as duas tiveram uma discussão séria. Ficaram frente a frente num café em Setúbal — o mesmo café onde costumavam ir depois das aulas, em tempos melhores. A Sónia disse tudo o que pensava. A Marta respondeu com palavras duras. Quando a conversa acabou, as duas saíram em direções diferentes. Não se despediram.

On an October afternoon, the two of them had a serious argument. They stood face to face in a café in Setúbal — the same café they used to go to after school, in better times. Sónia said everything she thought. Marta responded with harsh words. When the conversation ended, the two of them left in different directions. They did not say goodbye.

Durante os meses seguintes, não houve contacto. A Marta apagou a Sónia das redes sociais. A Sónia apagou as fotografias das duas do seu quarto. As amigas comuns ficaram numa posição difícil — não queriam tomar partido. Quando se encontravam com a Marta, não falavam da Sónia. Quando se encontravam com a Sónia, não falavam da Marta.

During the following months, there was no contact. Marta deleted Sónia from social media. Sónia removed the photos of the two of them from her room. Their mutual friends were in a difficult position — they did not want to take sides. When they met Marta, they did not mention Sónia. When they met Sónia, they did not mention Marta.

A Sónia mudou-se para Lisboa em fevereiro para trabalhar numa empresa de comunicação. Num novo apartamento, numa nova cidade, com novos colegas, as saudades da Marta chegaram de forma inesperada. Era uma sexta-feira à noite. A Sónia acabou de jantar sozinha, lavou os pratos, e sentou-se no sofá. Pegou no telemóvel e olhou para o nome da Marta nos contactos. Não marcou o número.

Sónia moved to Lisbon in February to work at a communications company. In a new flat, in a new city, with new colleagues, the longing for Marta arrived unexpectedly. It was a Friday evening. Sónia finished eating dinner alone, washed the dishes, and sat on the sofa. She picked up her phone and looked at Marta's name in her contacts. She did not dial the number.

A Marta e o Frederico acabaram em março. Não foi uma separação fácil. Depois de tudo acabar, a Marta ficou em casa muitos dias, triste e cansada. As suas amigas ligavam e iam visitá-la. Mas havia uma ausência que ela sentia de forma diferente — a ausência da Sónia. Era a Sónia que ela queria que estivesse ali naquele momento.

Marta and Frederico broke up in March. It was not an easy separation. After everything ended, Marta stayed at home for many days, sad and tired. Her friends called and came to visit her. But there was an absence she felt in a different way — the absence of Sónia. It was Sónia she wanted to have there at that moment.

Em abril, a Marta escreveu uma mensagem. Não foi fácil começar a escrever. Ficou com o telemóvel na mão durante muito tempo, a pensar nas palavras certas. No final, escreveu apenas: «Olá, Sónia. Já passaram muitos meses. Acho que acabei por perceber algumas coisas que disseste. Tenho muitas saudades de ti.» Enviou a mensagem e ficou à espera.

In April, Marta wrote a message. It was not easy to start writing. She held her phone for a long time, thinking of the right words. In the end, she wrote only: «Hello, Sónia. Many months have passed. I think I ended up understanding some of the things you said. I miss you a lot.» She sent the message and waited.

A Sónia leu a mensagem três vezes. Depois ficou a olhar para o ecrã durante um minuto. Sentiu muitas coisas ao mesmo tempo — alívio, tristeza, alegria. Acabou por responder: «Marta. Eu também tenho saudades tuas. Posso telefonar?» A Marta respondeu imediatamente: «Sim. Liga agora.»

Sónia read the message three times. Then she stared at the screen for a minute. She felt many things at the same time — relief, sadness, joy. She ended up replying: «Marta. I miss you too. Can I call?» Marta replied immediately: «Yes. Call now.»

Falaram durante mais de uma hora. Choraram as duas. A Sónia pediu desculpa pela forma como tinha falado. A Marta pediu desculpa por não ter ouvido. Não era necessário perceber tudo de uma vez — o importante era que a conversa tinha começado outra vez. Quando acabou a chamada, as duas ficaram em silêncio por um momento, a sorrir para os respetivos telemóveis.

They spoke for more than an hour. Both of them cried. Sónia apologised for the way she had spoken. Marta apologised for not having listened. It was not necessary to understand everything at once — what mattered was that the conversation had started again. When the call ended, the two of them stayed silent for a moment, smiling at their respective phones.

Em maio, a Sónia voltou a Setúbal para um fim de semana. Combinaram encontrar-se no mesmo café de outubro — o café onde a amizade tinha acabado. Desta vez, pediram dois sumos e um bolo de amêndoa para partilhar. Ficaram ali durante três horas. Não falaram do Frederico. Falaram das memórias antigas, do futuro, dos sonhos.

In May, Sónia came back to Setúbal for a weekend. They arranged to meet at the same October café — the café where the friendship had ended. This time, they ordered two juices and an almond cake to share. They stayed there for three hours. They did not talk about Frederico. They talked about old memories, about the future, about dreams.

Quando saíram do café, a Sónia disse: — Achas que a nossa amizade vai acabar outra vez? A Marta pensou um momento e respondeu: — Não sei. Mas sei que, mesmo quando acaba uma fase, não acaba tudo. E hoje acabou uma das piores fases — o silêncio. Agora podemos começar de novo, mais devagar, mas melhor. A Sónia sorriu e deu-lhe o braço.

When they left the café, Sónia said: — Do you think our friendship will end again? Marta thought for a moment and replied: — I don't know. But I know that even when one phase ends, not everything ends. And today one of the worst phases ended — the silence. Now we can start again, more slowly, but better. Sónia smiled and linked arms with her.
