A Exposição Proibida

Na noite da inauguração de "Corpo Político", no Museu de Serralves, havia do lado de fora um grupo de manifestantes que batia em tambores improvisados, e do lado de dentro havia champanhe, nervosismo, e a instalação central de Marta Sousa a ocupar as três salas do piso térreo como uma sentença. A mostra — uma série de retratos fotográficos de figuras políticas portuguesas em situações de vulnerabilidade privada, captadas sem o seu conhecimento ou consentimento — suscitou protestos ainda antes de as portas terem aberto ao público, como se a simples existência das imagens bastasse para perturbar o equilíbrio de algo que ninguém sabia nomear com precisão.

On the opening night of "Political Body" at Serralves Museum, there was outside a group of protesters beating improvised drums, and inside there was champagne, unease, and Marta Sousa's central installation occupying the three ground-floor rooms like a verdict. The exhibition — a series of photographic portraits of Portuguese political figures in situations of private vulnerability, captured without their knowledge or consent — gave rise to protests even before the doors had opened to the public, as if the mere existence of the images were enough to disturb the equilibrium of something no one knew how to name precisely.

Quando lhe perguntaram, no dia seguinte, se a obra pretendia suscitar escândalo, corrigiu a palavra com paciência: o que pretendia suscitar era uma reflexão — sobre a fronteira entre o público e o privado na era da vigilância digital, sobre o que protegemos quando protegemos a imagem de um político, sobre quem decidiu que certas vulnerabilidades eram indecentes de ver. "A arte tem de suscitar desconforto", disse ela. "Se suscitar apenas aprovação, transformou-se em relações públicas."

Marta Sousa was present at the opening with the unusual calm of someone who has spent years preparing something and is no longer afraid of what may happen. When asked the following day whether the work intended to give rise to scandal, she corrected the word patiently: what it intended to provoke was reflection — on the boundary between public and private in the age of digital surveillance, on what we protect when we protect a politician's image, on who decided that certain vulnerabilities were indecent to look at. "Art must give rise to discomfort," she said. "If it only provokes approval, it has become public relations."

Em menos de quarenta e oito horas, o debate que a exposição suscitara havia extravasado completamente o âmbito cultural para o qual ninguém o havia convocado. Um deputado do partido de centro-direita exigiu o encerramento imediato da mostra perante as câmaras de televisão, com a urgência teatral de quem fareja uma oportunidade. Argumentou que as imagens violavam o direito à imagem e à privacidade. A declaração suscitou, por sua vez, uma resposta assinada por duzentos e trinta intelectuais, artistas e académicos que publicaram uma carta aberta em defesa da liberdade de expressão artística — e que, diga-se, suscitou ainda mais visibilidade para a exposição do que qualquer conferência de imprensa poderia ter conseguido.

Within forty-eight hours, the debate the exhibition had given rise to had spilled entirely beyond the cultural domain to which no one had summoned it. A member of parliament from the centre-right party demanded the immediate closure of the show before television cameras, with the theatrical urgency of someone who senses an opportunity. He argued the images violated the right to image and to privacy. The declaration in turn provoked a response signed by two hundred and thirty intellectuals, artists and academics who published an open letter in defence of artistic freedom of expression — and which, it must be said, gave rise to far more visibility for the exhibition than any press conference could have managed.

A crítica dividiu-se com a elegância habitual dos debates em que ninguém quer mudar de opinião. O crítico de arte do Público, António Ferreira, escreveu que a obra suscitava questões que o país preferia ignorar mas que urgentemente precisava de enfrentar: "Marta Sousa suscita o incómodo de forma deliberada e precisa — e essa precisão é o que distingue a arte política da decoração de interiores." A sua colunista rival no Correio da Manhã retorquiu que a exposição suscitava antes de mais narcisismo intelectual, e que a arte não carecia de escandalizar para ser relevante. Tinham as duas razão em coisas diferentes, o que é, no fundo, o único resultado que a grande arte suscita com consistência.

Criticism divided itself with the habitual elegance of debates in which no one wishes to change their mind. The art critic at Público, António Ferreira, wrote that the work raised questions the country preferred to ignore but urgently needed to confront: "Marta Sousa provokes discomfort deliberately and precisely — and that precision is what distinguishes political art from interior decoration." His rival columnist at Correio da Manhã retorted that the exhibition gave rise above all to intellectual narcissism, and that art had no need to scandalise in order to be relevant. They were both right about different things, which is, in the end, the only result that great art provokes with consistency.

Entretanto, as filas em Serralves cresciam com a lógica implacável de tudo aquilo que se tenta proibir. A controvérsia suscitara uma curiosidade que nenhuma campanha de marketing, por mais cara que fosse, conseguiria suscitar de forma orgânica. Vinham do Porto, de Lisboa, de Braga, de Faro. Alguns com cartazes de protesto. Muitos em silêncio. A maioria saía da mostra em silêncio também — aquele silêncio diferente, pensativo, que não é ausência de palavras mas presença de algo ainda não digerido. A obra conseguira suscitar exatamente aquilo que pretendia: qualquer coisa difícil de nomear, que é sempre o sinal de que a arte chegou a algum lugar.

Meanwhile, the queues at Serralves grew with the implacable logic of everything one tries to forbid. The controversy had given rise to a curiosity that no marketing campaign, however expensive, could have provoked organically. They came from Porto, Lisbon, Braga, Faro. Some with protest placards. Many in silence. Most left the exhibition in silence too — that different silence, thoughtful, which is not an absence of words but the presence of something not yet digested. The work had managed to give rise to precisely what it intended: something difficult to name, which is always the sign that art has arrived somewhere.

No último dia da exposição, Marta Sousa estava na sala principal quando um jornalista lhe fez a pergunta que todos queriam fazer e ninguém tinha ainda ousado formular diretamente: se a controvérsia havia suscitado arrependimento. Ela demorou um segundo — não de hesitação, mas de recusa em responder depressa de mais. "A controvérsia não suscitou arrependimento", disse por fim. "Suscitou conversas. E conversas são o que a democracia precisa, mesmo quando são desconfortáveis." Houve um momento de silêncio na sala — o mesmo tipo de silêncio com que tantos visitantes tinham saído dali —, e depois alguém começou a aplaudir. O debate que a exposição suscitara estava longe de ter terminado. Provavelmente, nunca terminaria. E era esse, precisamente, o seu ponto.

On the last day of the exhibition, Marta Sousa was in the main hall when a journalist asked her the question everyone had wanted to ask and no one had yet dared to formulate directly: whether the controversy had given rise to regret. She took a second — not of hesitation, but of refusal to answer too quickly. "The controversy didn't give rise to regret," she said at last. "It gave rise to conversations. And conversations are what democracy needs, even when they are uncomfortable." There was a moment of silence in the room — the same kind of silence with which so many visitors had left — and then someone began to applaud. The debate the exhibition had given rise to was far from over. It probably never would be. And that, precisely, was its point.
