Margarida Fonseca wrote novels that people described as "enigmatic" — which, she knew, frequently implied they had not understood them but did not want to admit it. What implicated her, in the sense of involving and challenging her, was precisely what the text did not say explicitly. The ellipsis, the silence between two sentences, the scene that ends before what the reader expects happens — all of this implied a conception of literature as an implicit contract between writer and reader, where the unspoken carries as much weight as the spoken, and where the responsibility of constructing meaning is shared between those who write and those who read, not delegated entirely to one of them.

The novel she was working on that winter was the most difficult she had ever attempted. The protagonist was a woman who never spoke directly about what she felt — everything that implied her emotional state was conveyed through what she noticed in the exterior world, through the order of her actions, through the words she chose to describe others. It was a technique that implied an active reader, willing to work the text, to construct the character's interior from the fragments the text implied without making explicit. Margarida knew this would exclude some readers. She accepted the implication without remorse: writing implies choosing what type of reading you invite and what type you renounce.
