Professor Rodrigo Matos had published a book on emotional dissimulation that had generated an unexpected debate outside academic circles. The thesis was simple in its formulation but disturbing in its implications: the ability to dissimulate emotions — to present a face that does not correspond to what is felt internally — is not a pathology or a character flaw, but a fundamental social competence that human beings develop from early childhood and without which complex social interactions would be impossible. What was at issue was whether dissimulating could be simultaneously necessary and, in the long run, alienating.

The data Rodrigo presented was clear: people who could dissimulate their negative emotions more effectively had, on average, better interpersonal relationships, more successful careers and more positive mental health assessments in the short term. But dissimulating systematically created a cumulative cost that well-being psychology rarely accounted for: the distance between the internal self and the presented self became, over time, difficult to traverse. There were people who had dissimulated so much and for so long that they no longer knew what they felt beneath the mask — the mask had become the face, not through genuine transformation but through forgetting what was underneath.

The question Rodrigo could not dissimulate — from himself, ironically — was his own ambivalence. Dissimulating well was a real adaptive advantage, and it would be paternalistic to deny it that value. But a society that systematically rewards those who dissimulate best is creating structural incentives for alienation — it is building a world where real suffering is made invisible because everyone has learned to dissimulate it effectively, where systemic problems persist because dissimulating their individual impact is more rewarded than articulating it collectively. Dissimulating suffering does not resolve it. It merely dissimulates the pressure for the structures that produce it to transform.
