In the 15th century, the world known to Europeans was very small and full of mysteries. It was believed that the Atlantic Ocean, called the 'Dark Sea', was inhabited by giant monsters and that the water boiled near the equator. But in Portugal, a small kingdom at the edge of Europe, there were men who wanted to sail beyond the horizon. Under the incentive of Prince Henry, known as 'The Navigator', Portugal began one of the most fascinating eras in human history: the Age of Discovery. The goal was to find new trade routes for the spices of the East and expand geographical knowledge.

The center of all this activity was Sagres, in the Algarve. There, sailors, cartographers, astronomers, and shipbuilders gathered to study the art of navigation. They perfected instruments such as the astrolabe and the compass, which allowed ships to orient themselves by the stars on the high seas. But the greatest innovation was the 'caravel'. It was a light, fast ship with triangular sails that allowed sailing even with contrary winds. Without the caravel, the Portuguese would never have been able to explore the coast of Africa and face the dangerous ocean currents.
