O Grande Terramoto de 1755

Era o dia 1 de novembro de 1755, o Dia de Todos os Santos. Em Lisboa, a manhã era solalheira e tranquila. As pessoas estavam nas igrejas, celebrando a data com velas acesas e cânticos religiosos. Ninguém podia imaginar que, sob os seus pés, a terra estava prestes a abrir-se. Às nove e quarenta da manhã, um som profundo, como um trovão subterrâneo, ecoou por toda a cidade. Foi o início do grande terramoto que destruiria a capital do império português.

It was November 1, 1755, All Saints' Day. In Lisbon, the morning was sunny and peaceful. People were in the churches, celebrating the date with lit candles and religious chants. No one could imagine that, beneath their feet, the earth was about to open up. At nine-forty in the morning, a deep sound, like underground thunder, echoed throughout the city. It was the beginning of the great earthquake that would destroy the capital of the Portuguese empire.

O primeiro abalo durou vários minutos. As casas de pedra começaram a tremer e a cair sobre os cidadãos que fugiam em pânico para as ruas estreitas de Alfama e da Baixa. As igrejas, cheias de fiéis, desmoronaram-se, prendendo centenas de pessoas sob os escombros. As velas acesas para o feriado religioso caíram sobre as madeiras e os tecidos, dando início a incêndios incontroláveis que se espalharam rapidamente devido ao vento forte que soprava do Tejo.

The first shock lasted several minutes. The stone houses began to shake and fall upon the citizens who were fleeing in panic into the narrow streets of Alfama and Baixa. The churches, full of worshippers, collapsed, trapping hundreds of people under the rubble. The candles lit for the religious holiday fell onto wood and fabrics, starting uncontrollable fires that spread quickly due to the strong wind blowing from the Tagus.
