It was the early hours of April 25, 1974. In Portugal, the silence of the night was interrupted by a song playing on the radio: 'Grândola, Vila Morena'. For most people, it was just music, but for a group of brave soldiers, it was the signal to change the country's destiny. Portugal had lived under a dictatorship for almost fifty years, a regime that limited freedom, censored the press, and kept the country isolated from the rest of Europe. That night, the 'Captains of April' decided it was time to act and return democracy to the Portuguese people.
War tanks began to advance towards Lisbon. The military occupied strategic points, such as airports and television stations. They wanted to change the government peacefully, without bloodshed. When morning came, the capital's inhabitants woke up to unexpected news: the army was in the street, not to repress, but to liberate. Despite appeals from the military for people to stay home, thousands of citizens took to the streets to support the soldiers and celebrate the end of oppression.
It was at Largo do Carmo, where the government was taking refuge, that the most iconic moment of the revolution took place. A flower seller named Celeste Caeiro was carrying an armful of red carnations to a restaurant. Since the restaurant was closed due to the confusion, she began offering the carnations to the soldiers. One of them placed the flower in the barrel of his rifle. Quickly, other soldiers followed suit. The weapons, which normally serve to kill, were now decorated with flowers. That's how the name 'Carnation Revolution' was born, a symbol of peace that would change Portugal's image in the world.
The fall of the dictatorship brought immense joy and an urgent desire to change everything that was wrong. Censorship ended, political prisoners were released, and exiles could finally return to their homeland. Portugal began to open up to the world and prepare for the first free elections in decades. However, the transition process was not simple. There were many different opinions on how to organize the new State. It was a period of great political debate and social agitation, but the determination to maintain freedom was stronger than any disagreement.
One of the great challenges was changing Portugal's relationship with its colonies in Africa. The colonial war, which had lasted for thirteen years, had caused much suffering and international isolation. With democracy, Portugal recognized the right to independence for the peoples of Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It was a historic moment of decolonization that profoundly changed Portuguese identity. Many Portuguese living in these territories had to return to Portugal, in a complex process that required great national solidarity.
The revolution also served to change the role of women in society. During the dictatorship, women had very limited rights and were educated to be only housewives. With democracy, laws were changed to guarantee gender equality. Women gained access to all professions, voting rights became universal, and female education was encouraged. Changing mentalities took time, but April 25 was the engine that allowed the beginning of this fundamental transformation for the country's progress.
In the economy, Portugal also needed to change. The country was predominantly agricultural and technologically underdeveloped. Entry into the European Economic Community (today the European Union) in 1986 was a decisive step to modernize infrastructure and improve citizens' quality of life. New hospitals, schools, and highways were built. Portugal stopped being a gray and poor country to become a modern and dynamic nation. However, the spirit of April remained present in the valuation of public services and social protection.
Today, as we celebrate April 25, we remember the values of freedom and justice. The song 'Grândola, Vila Morena' continues to be sung in moments of protest or celebration, reminding us that democracy is a precious good that must be protected every day. Changing the world for the better is a continuous task. Today's problems are different from those of 1974, but the courage and unity that the Portuguese showed that spring remain a source of inspiration for new generations.
The heritage of the revolution is visible at every corner of Portugal. Freedom of expression allowed a cultural and artistic explosion. Literature, cinema, and music flourished without the shackles of censorship. Portugal became a world tourist destination, not just for the sun and beaches, but for its history of resilience and its capacity to change peacefully. The red carnation, once a simple seasonal flower, became a universal symbol that it is possible to tear down walls and build bridges through peace.
Finally, the Carnation Revolution teaches us that it's never too late to change the course of history. When a people unites with a common and noble goal, great transformations can happen. Portugal is today a consolidated democracy, an example of peace and tolerance. Looking back, the Portuguese feel proud of the day they decided to change their fate. The courage of April is the heart of the nation, a light that continues to guide the country towards a future of equality, fraternity, and hope.
