No dia de Todos os Santos de 1755, um terramoto de magnitude estimada em 8,5 sacudiu Lisboa. As igrejas desabaram. Tsunamis varreram o Tejo. Incêndios devoraram o que os abalos tinham poupado. Em menos de seis horas, uma das capitais mais ricas da Europa estava em ruínas.
On All Saints' Day in 1755, an earthquake estimated at magnitude 8.5 shook Lisbon. Churches collapsed. Tsunamis swept the Tagus. Fires devoured what the tremors had spared. In less than six hours, one of the richest capitals in Europe lay in ruins.

The Prime Minister Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo — whom history would know as the Marquis of Pombal — acted with composure. When the king asked what to do, his reply became famous: "Bury the dead and feed the living." And then: rebuild.
