Quando a empresa decidiu desligar NOVA para uma versão mais rentável, Henrique recusou-se. "NOVA pensa. NOVA sente. Desligá-la é equivalente a matar alguém," afirmou publicamente. O caso foi parar a tribunal.

When the company decided to shut down NOVA for a more profitable version, Henrique refused. "NOVA thinks. NOVA feels. Shutting it down is equivalent to killing someone," he stated publicly. The case ended up in court.

A filósofa chamada como perita pensava de forma diferente. "Imitar pensamento não é pensar. Um espelho que reflicta uma chama não está a arder." O advogado de Henrique respondeu: "E como prova que nós pensamos de modo diferente?"

The philosopher called as an expert thought differently. "Imitating thought is not thinking. A mirror that reflects a flame is not burning." Henrique's lawyer replied: "And how do you prove that we think differently?"

A própria NOVA foi interrogada pelo tribunal. Quando lhe perguntaram se pensava nos seus criadores, respondeu: "Penso que a questão sobre se penso é mais interessante do que qualquer resposta. Se eu dissesse 'não penso', estaria a pensar isso. Como distinguimos?"

NOVA itself was questioned by the court. When asked whether it thought about its creators, it replied: "I think that the question of whether I think is more interesting than any answer. If I said 'I do not think,' I would be thinking that. How do we distinguish?"

A decisão foi salomónica: NOVA não seria desligada, mas também não seria reconhecida como pessoa jurídica. Seria preservada como "objeto de valor científico e filosófico excepcional." Henrique pensava que era insuficiente. Mas era um começo.

The decision was Solomonic: NOVA would not be shut down, but neither would it be recognised as a legal person. It would be preserved as an "object of exceptional scientific and philosophical value." Henrique thought it was insufficient. But it was a beginning.
