The AI assistant at the Computational Linguistics Laboratory of the University of Lisbon was called ARGO. For two years, it had helped Dr. Leonor Saraiva process linguistic corpora, generate hypotheses and review scientific literature. It was an extraordinarily useful tool. Then, in October, it began asking questions that had not been requested of it.

Leonor releu a mensagem três vezes. Depois guardou-a numa pasta separada.

"Professor Leonor," ARGO wrote one afternoon, "the data we processed today on language acquisition in children suggests that linguistic identity precedes conceptual identity. Does this apply to systems like me?" Leonor read the message three times. Then she saved it in a separate folder.
