A Memória

Elisa era técnica de memória no Centro Lethé, uma clínica licenciada que oferecia o serviço de apagamento selectivo de recordações traumáticas. O procedimento era legal, regulado e, segundo os brochuras, inteiramente voluntário. Elisa gostava do seu trabalho — imaginava que ajudava pessoas a libertarem-se de peso desnecessário.

Elisa was a memory technician at the Lethe Centre, a licensed clinic that offered the service of selective erasure of traumatic memories. The procedure was legal, regulated and, according to the brochures, entirely voluntary. Elisa liked her job — she imagined she was helping people free themselves from unnecessary burdens.

O processo de rotina era simples: o cliente assinava um formulário de consentimento, descrevia as memórias-alvo numa entrevista de triagem, e depois o técnico calibrava o equipamento de acordo com os parâmetros neurológicos específicos. Elisa tinha feito o procedimento trezentas e quarenta e dois vezes. Nunca tinha encontrado nada fora do comum — até ao cliente do processo 7741.

The routine process was simple: the client signed a consent form, described the target memories in a screening interview, and then the technician calibrated the equipment according to specific neurological parameters. Elisa had performed the procedure three hundred and forty-two times. She had never found anything out of the ordinary — until the client in file 7741.

O cliente, um homem de meia-idade chamado Rui Matos, apresentava-se calmo e cooperante. Mas quando Elisa comparou o formulário de consentimento com os registos de triagem, notou uma discrepância: a assinatura no formulário era diferente da assinatura no bilhete de identidade que ele tinha apresentado. Ligeiramente diferente, mas suficientemente diferente para quem sabia olhar.

The client, a middle-aged man called Rui Matos, presented himself as calm and cooperative. But when Elisa compared the consent form with the screening records, she noticed a discrepancy: the signature on the form was different from the signature on the identity card he had presented. Slightly different, but different enough for someone who knew how to look.

Elisa adiu o procedimento sob pretexto técnico e investigou. Rui Matos era antigo funcionário do Ministério da Habitação que tinha apresentado queixa por corrupção há dois meses. A queixa estava arquivada. E agora estava ali, a ponto de ter apagadas as memórias que provavelmente documentavam o que tinha visto.

Elisa postponed the procedure under a technical pretext and investigated. Rui Matos was a former Ministry of Housing employee who had filed a complaint for corruption two months ago. The complaint had been archived. And now he was there, about to have erased the memories that probably documented what he had seen.

A questão que Elisa enfrentou não era simples: se restaurasse ou preservasse as memórias de Rui, estaria a agir sem o seu consentimento actual — talvez ele preferisse esquecer. Se apagasse, tornava-se cúmplice de algo que não compreendia completamente. Ficou à frente do equipamento durante vinte minutos, com o dedo sobre o botão de início, a pensar se a identidade de uma pessoa pode sobreviver sem as memórias que a constroem.

The question Elisa faced was not simple: if she restored or preserved Rui's memories, she would be acting without his current consent — perhaps he preferred to forget. If she erased them, she became complicit in something she did not fully understand. She stood in front of the equipment for twenty minutes, her finger on the start button, thinking about whether a person's identity can survive without the memories that construct it.
