Story opening — Portuguese with English Translation

A Dra.

Dr Monteiro arrived at the National Archive two years ago, after thirty years working in municipal archives. She is meticulous, patient and has a remarkable memory for detail. When she begins to catalogue a documentary collection from the seventies, she notices a gap that should not exist: a series of files on land expropriations between 1972 and 1975 is simply not there.

A Dra.

She checks the access records. The last person to work with that collection was her predecessor, Dr Figueiredo, who retired eighteen months ago. The system metadata shows that twenty-three files were marked as "eliminated due to irreparable deterioration" — a rarely used category that requires no superior approval. Dr Monteiro knows that archival paper does not deteriorate in eighteen months.
