A Teimosia do Coral

A três metros abaixo da superfície do Atlântico, junto à costa da ilha do Faial nos Açores, existe uma colónia de coral que persiste há, pelo menos, quatrocentos anos. Isabel Drummond sabe-o porque os seus antepassados científicos a mediram e catalogaram pela primeira vez em 1623, e porque ela própria a tem vindo a observar desde o início do seu doutoramento, há doze anos. Three metres below the surface of the Atlantic, off the coast of the island of Faial in the Azores, there exists a coral colony that has persisted for at least four hundred years. Isabel Drummond knows this because her scientific forebears measured and catalogued it for the first time in 1623, and because she herself has been observing it since the beginning of her doctorate, twelve years ago. Each dive is a visit to an organism that decided, with the silent obstinacy of beings without a central nervous system, that it was going to persist regardless of circumstances.

The water temperature has risen 1.4 degrees Celsius since the oldest records Isabel has access to. For coral, which is an animal — not a plant, as many visitors to the Ponta Delgada aquarium continue to suppose — this increase is equivalent to a persistent fever that gradually wears down the defence mechanisms. Isabel has been observing the bleaching with the carefully constructed objectivity that science demands, but there is something about this particular colony that makes emotional distance difficult for her.

"It persists because it has no choice," said her supervisor, Professor Menezes, during the monthly videoconference in which they discussed the data. "Coral does not decide to persist. It persists because that is what organisms do while the environment allows it." "With all due respect, Professor," replied Isabel, choosing her words carefully, "I am not certain the distinction is so clear. There are colonies in the same bay that no longer persist. This one persists. Something in its genetic composition or local microecology allows it to persist where others cannot. That does not seem trivial to me."

The question of whether biological persistence has anything in common with human persistence — moral stubbornness, the refusal to give up in the face of adversity — was one that Isabel tried to keep out of her papers but that persisted in her private thinking with a regularity that unsettled her. Her more positivist colleagues considered her too prone to anthropomorphisation. Isabel considered them too frightened of the implications of what they studied.

In 2031, the climate model that her research group had developed predicted that the colony would cease to persist somewhere between 2038 and 2045, depending on emissions scenarios. Isabel presented this data at an international conference in Bergen, before a room of two hundred researchers taking notes and drinking decaffeinated coffee. The figure was received with the professional sobriety that scientists reserve for bad news they already expected. Then the moderator moved on to the next presentation.

What the conference did not discuss, because it was materially irrelevant to the models, was the fact that the colony had persisted through the Little Ice Age, through the eruption of Capelinhos in 1957 that dramatically altered the coastline of Faial, through storms that destroyed neighbouring colonies. It had persisted during the Second World War while German submarines passed offshore, during the colonial wars while young Azoreans emigrated en masse to America. It had persisted when no one knew it existed and when no one cared about its survival.

Isabel voltou ao Faial em Julho para o que chamava de "mergulho de documentação", mas que era, na prática, uma visita ao coral. Isabel returned to Faial in July for what she called a "documentation dive", but which was, in practice, a visit to the coral. She descended the three metres with underwater photography equipment and remained still for twenty minutes, observing. The colony showed signs of thermal stress on its northeast edge — a pallor that was the visible precursor of bleaching. But the centre persisted with its ferruginous colour intact, the small polyp galleries alive and active.

On the surface, her assistant Nuno was waiting with the boat and a thermos of hot coffee. "Is it still there?" he asked, as she removed her mask. "It still persists," replied Isabel. "For now."

Back in the laboratory, Isabel spent the afternoon entering data into a database that would persist long after the colony had disappeared. There was a dark irony in this: the records of an organism's death would persist on the university servers for decades, perhaps centuries, while the organism itself would cease to exist. Information about persistence persists; persistence itself is finite. It was a thought that had followed her since the Bergen conference and that she could not shake.

Her most recent paper, "Persistence Mechanisms in Deep Atlantic North Corals in the Context of Warming", was accepted in the Journal of Marine Biology with minor revisions. The anonymous reviewer had underlined the section where Isabel discussed the "exceptional adaptive capacity" of the Faial colony and written in the margin: "Anthropomorphic language? Please revise." Isabel revised the text carefully, removing the adjectives the reviewer had objected to, but the idea persisted in the text through more neutral formulations. That was how ideas persisted in science: disguised.

In September, the updated model with the July data brought bad news: the rate of degradation on the northeast edge of the colony was 30% faster than the previous model had predicted. If this trend persisted, the extinction date would have to be brought forward to between 2035 and 2040. Isabel communicated the results to Professor Menezes by email, without drama, with the attachments in PDF format. The science of environmental collapse had its own grammar of restraint, which persisted even when the news was as bad as possible.

That night, Isabel stayed awake past midnight, rereading the seventeenth-century article in which the colony had been described for the first time. The researcher was called António de Brito and had described the coral with the baroque vocabulary of his era — "a stony garden of admirable complexity that persists in the depths like a divine mystery". Isabel liked the phrase. António de Brito did not know he was documenting the beginning of a clock with a limited lifespan. He described the coral as an eternal mystery because, in his era, he had reason to believe it was. Persistence, concluded Isabel, is only visible in retrospect. While it persists, it seems inevitable.
