Luís Costa tinha crescido em Lyon como filho e neto de emigrantes portugueses. Em casa, falava português com os avós, comia caldo verde ao domingo e ouvia fado nas festas de verão. Na escola, era simplesmente francês. Mas aos vinte e cinco anos, quando começou a trabalhar numa empresa multinacional em Paris, percebeu que precisava de afirmar algo que nunca tinha precisado afirmar explicitamente antes: quem era.

Luís Costa had grown up in Lyon as the son and grandson of Portuguese emigrants. At home, he spoke Portuguese with his grandparents, ate caldo verde on Sundays and listened to fado at summer parties. At school, he was simply French. But at twenty-five, when he began working at a multinational company in Paris, he realised he needed to affirm something he had never needed to affirm explicitly before: who he was.

O gatilho foi uma reunião onde o seu colega britânico disse, sem má intenção, que "os portugueses são muito reservados e difíceis de ler". Luís poderia ter ficado em silêncio. Em vez disso, disse: "Sou português. E posso dizer-te que essa generalização não é útil para trabalharmos bem juntos." Afirmar isso — em voz alta, numa sala de reuniões, em francês — foi a primeira vez que se tinha identificado profissionalmente como português em vez de francês.

The trigger was a meeting where his British colleague said, without ill intent, that "the Portuguese are very reserved and hard to read". Luís could have stayed silent. Instead, he said: "I am Portuguese. And I can tell you that generalisation is not helpful for us working well together." Affirming that — out loud, in a meeting room, in French — was the first time he had identified himself professionally as Portuguese rather than French.
