Entre Duas Línguas

Marta Ferreira tinha interpretado durante doze anos em conferências internacionais, cimeiras da NATO e reuniões das Nações Unidas. Interpretar era, para ela, um exercício de invisibilidade deliberada: a intérprete não existia; existia apenas a voz do orador traduzida em tempo real. Mas naquele setembro em que foi chamada para interpretar numa reunião bilateral em Lisboa, a sua invisibilidade entrou em colapso.

Marta Ferreira had been interpreting for twelve years at international conferences, NATO summits and United Nations meetings. Interpreting was, for her, an exercise in deliberate invisibility: the interpreter did not exist; only the speaker's voice translated in real time existed. But that September, when she was called to interpret at a bilateral meeting in Lisbon, her invisibility collapsed.

A reunião era entre o Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros português e uma delegação de um país com um historial documentado de violações dos direitos humanos. Marta tinha interpretado em situações diplomaticamente sensíveis antes. O que não tinha feito era interpretar declarações que contradiziam diretamente o que sabia ser factualmente falso — dados fabricados, negações de eventos que ela própria tinha visto documentados.

The meeting was between the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a delegation from a country with a documented history of human rights violations. Marta had interpreted in diplomatically sensitive situations before. What she had not done was interpret statements that directly contradicted what she knew to be factually false — fabricated data, denials of events she herself had seen documented.

Na cabine de interpretação, enquanto o representante estrangeiro falava, Marta manteve a voz estável e neutra. Interpretar significava transferir o sentido, não julgá-lo. Era o princípio deontológico fundamental da profissão. Mas à medida que traduzia afirmações que sabia serem falsas, sentia o peso de cada palavra. In the interpretation booth, while the foreign representative spoke, Marta kept her voice steady and neutral. Interpreting meant transferring meaning, not judging it. It was the fundamental deontological principle of the profession. But as she translated statements she knew to be false, she felt the weight of every word. Was she interpreting lies with the same fidelity as she would interpret the truth?

No intervalo, a sua colega Maria João, que partilhava a cabine, disse-lhe: "Estás bem?" Marta não estava. "Estou a interpretar declarações que sei serem falsas. Não me sinto bem com isso." Maria João assentiu. "É a nossa função. Não somos árbitros da verdade. Somos condutoras do discurso." Era a posição correta. Marta sabia isso. Mas saber uma coisa e sentir outra era uma tensão que a profissão não ensinava a resolver.

During the break, her colleague Maria João, who shared the booth, said: "Are you all right?" Marta was not. "I am interpreting statements I know to be false. I don't feel good about it." Maria João nodded. "It's our function. We are not arbiters of truth. We are conductors of speech." It was the correct position. Marta knew that. But knowing one thing and feeling another was a tension the profession did not teach you to resolve.

Na segunda metade da reunião, Marta interpretou com a mesma precisão técnica, mas com uma consciência diferente. Depois, no relatório que enviou ao coordenador de interpretação, pediu para não ser alocada a delegações daquele país no futuro. Era o único instrumento que tinha. Não podia alterar o que tinha interpretado. Podia apenas controlar o que aceitava interpretar a seguir.

In the second half of the meeting, Marta interpreted with the same technical precision, but with a different awareness. Afterwards, in the report she sent to the interpretation coordinator, she asked not to be allocated to that country's delegations in future. It was the only instrument she had. She could not change what she had interpreted. She could only control what she agreed to interpret next.

Três meses depois, recebeu um convite para falar numa conferência sobre ética na interpretação. Preparou uma comunicação sobre o paradoxo do intérprete: interpretar com fidelidade um discurso que consideramos antiético não é amoralidade — é disciplina. Mas a disciplina tem limites. A questão não era onde colocar o limite — era como interpretar, com honestidade, as razões que nos levam a recusar.

Three months later, she received an invitation to speak at a conference on ethics in interpretation. She prepared a paper on the interpreter's paradox: faithfully interpreting a speech we consider unethical is not amorality — it is discipline. But discipline has limits. The question was not where to draw the line — it was how to interpret, honestly, the reasons that lead us to refuse.
