A Gramática do Impossível

Afonso Braga não queria escrever poesia — queria subverter a expectativa do que a poesia podia ser. O seu terceiro livro, publicado por uma editora independente no Porto que se especializara em obras que subvertiam os formatos comerciais, era composto por cinquenta poemas em que a sintaxe era sistematicamente subvertida: verbos ocupavam o lugar de substantivos, pontuação era retirada em lugares previsíveis e inserida onde perturbava, línguas diferentes coexistiam na mesma linha sem tradução nem marcação tipográfica. Não era dificuldade pela dificuldade — era a tentativa de subverter o contrato de leitura automática a que o leitor chega ao texto, a leitura que reconhece antes de ver, que processa sem sentir, que entende sem ser afetada.

Afonso Braga did not want to write poetry — he wanted to subvert the expectation of what poetry could be. His third book, published by an independent press in Porto that had specialised in works that subverted commercial formats, consisted of fifty poems in which syntax was systematically subverted: verbs occupied the place of nouns, punctuation was removed in predictable places and inserted where it disturbed, different languages coexisted on the same line without translation or typographical marking. It was not difficulty for difficulty's sake — it was the attempt to subvert the automatic reading contract through which a reader arrives at a text, the reading that recognises before it sees, that processes without feeling, that understands without being affected.

A crítica dividiu-se. Uns diziam que subverter a gramática era um gesto vazio, hermético, autoindulgente — a pose do artista que confunde dificuldade com profundidade. Outros argumentavam que subverter convenções linguísticas era o gesto mais político possível: as línguas normalizam realidades, tornam certas experiências dizíveis e outras invisíveis, constroem sujeitos e excluem outros. Mudar as suas estruturas é subverter as categorias que permitem ou impedem a existência no discurso. Afonso não respondia às críticas. Sabia que subverter expectativas implicava perder alguns leitores, e que era esse o preço a pagar para encontrar os outros.

The critics were divided. Some said that subverting grammar was an empty, hermetic, self-indulgent gesture — the pose of the artist who confuses difficulty with depth. Others argued that subverting linguistic conventions was the most political gesture possible: languages normalise realities, make certain experiences sayable and others invisible, construct subjects and exclude others. Changing their structures is to subvert the categories that permit or prevent existence in discourse. Afonso did not respond to the critics. He knew that subverting expectations meant losing some readers, and that this was the price to pay for finding the others.

Num texto que acompanhou a exposição do livro numa galeria de Lisboa — onde as páginas foram impressas em grande formato e penduradas como quadros — Afonso escreveu: "Subverter a língua não é destruí-la. É abri-la. O que tento subverter não é a comunicação mas a ilusão de que comunicar é transparente, que as palavras chegam ao leitor intactas, sem o peso das estruturas que as formam. Subverter essa ilusão é o único ato honesto que a escrita pode fazer." Era uma declaração que subvertia a própria ideia de manifesto literário — nem programática nem explicativa, mas performativa da sua própria tese: ao formular a teoria da subversão, o texto subvertia as expectativas sobre como uma teoria deve ser formulada.

In a text that accompanied the book's exhibition in a Lisbon gallery — where the pages were printed in large format and hung like paintings — Afonso wrote: "Subverting language is not destroying it. It is opening it. What I attempt to subvert is not communication but the illusion that communicating is transparent, that words reach the reader intact, without the weight of the structures that form them. Subverting that illusion is the only honest act that writing can perform." It was a declaration that subverted the very idea of a literary manifesto — neither programmatic nor explanatory, but performative of its own thesis: in formulating the theory of subversion, the text subverted expectations about how a theory ought to be formulated.
