Catarina Leal had spent four years collecting data on migration patterns in northern Portugal, and her results systematically contradicted the most-cited theory in her field — a theory developed by the professor who had chaired her doctoral examination committee and who remained a central figure in Portuguese academia. Contradicting a colleague is always uncomfortable; contradicting your mentor is something of another dimension, combining the intellectual difficulty of questioning a respected body of work with the personal vulnerability of opposing someone who holds power over your career. But the data was what it was, and scientific integrity does not allow you to make it say what it does not say.
The dilemma was not intellectual — it was political, in the most precise sense of the word: it concerned the distribution of power in a community. Publishing the results meant publicly contradicting someone with influence to affect her career. Not publishing meant compromising her integrity as a researcher and allowing an inadequate theory to continue guiding public policies built upon it. Catarina spent months reviewing the methodology, looking for errors, asking international colleagues to contradict her if they found flaws. Nobody did. The data contradicted the established theory and there was no honest way to conceal it.
