Pedro Sai Cedo

O Pedro sai do escritório às seis da tarde, todos os dias, sem falta. Trabalha no quinto andar de um prédio no Saldanha, em Lisboa. Às cinco e cinquenta e cinco, arruma os papéis, desliga o ecrã e levanta-se. Os colegas olham para ele e sorriem. "Já sais, Pedro?" pergunta a Carla, da mesa ao lado. "Saio. São quase seis." "Tu sais sempre à hora certa. Nós ficamos até às oito e tu sais às seis em ponto." O Pedro encolhe os ombros. "Saio porque o meu trabalho está feito. Vocês também podem sair mais cedo, se quiserem."

Pedro leaves the office at six every evening without fail. He works on the fifth floor of a building in Saldanha, Lisbon. At five to six, he tidies his papers, switches off the screen, and stands up. His colleagues glance over and smile. "Off already, Pedro?" Carla asks from the next desk. "Yep. Nearly six." "You always leave bang on time. We're here till eight and you walk out at six on the dot." Pedro shrugs. "My work's done. You lot could leave earlier too, if you wanted."

O Pedro apanha o elevador até ao rés-do-chão. O segurança, o Sr. Valente, está sentado à entrada com o jornal. "Boa noite, Pedro. Já sais?" "Já saio, Sr. Valente. E o senhor? A que horas sai hoje?" "Eu só saio às dez. Alguém tem de ficar. Mas sai descansado — eu tomo conta disto." O Pedro acena com a cabeça e vai até à porta giratória. Lá fora, o sol ainda está quente. Sente o telemóvel no bolso. Sexta-feira. Fim de semana inteiro pela frente.

Pedro catches the lift down to the ground floor. The security guard, Sr. Valente, is parked at the entrance with his newspaper. "Evening, Pedro. Off already?" "On my way, Sr. Valente. What about you, what time do you finish tonight?" "Not till ten. Someone's got to stay. But off you go, don't worry — I'll hold the fort." Pedro nods and heads for the revolving door. Outside, the sun's still warm. He feels his phone in his pocket. Friday. Whole weekend ahead of him.

Mesmo antes de sair do edifício, ouve qualquer coisa. Um som baixo, vindo da copa. Para. A porta da copa está entreaberta. Alguém está a chorar. O Pedro olha para a rua — o autocarro das seis e dez passa daqui a três minutos. Se sair agora, apanha-o. Se não sair, fica à espera do das seis e meia. Hesita. "Não é problema meu", pensa. "Saio. Como sempre."

Just before he gets out of the building, he hears something. A quiet sound from the break room. He stops. The break room door is half open. Someone's crying. Pedro glances towards the street — the ten-past-six bus is three minutes away. If he leaves now, he catches it. If he doesn't, he's stuck waiting for the half-six one. He hesitates. "Not my problem," he tells himself. "I'll go. Same as always."

Mas não sai. Empurra a porta da copa. A Marta, uma colega mais nova do terceiro andar, está sentada na cadeira de plástico com a cara entre as mãos. Quando o vê, limpa os olhos depressa. "Desculpa, Pedro. Sai, sai — não é nada." "Não saio", diz ele. Entra. Liga a máquina de café. "Queres um? A máquina deu-me um descafeinado ontem, mas se calhar hoje porta-se melhor." A Marta quase ri.

But he doesn't go. He pushes the break room door open. Marta, a younger colleague from the third floor, is sat on the plastic chair with her face in her hands. She spots him and wipes her eyes fast. "Sorry, Pedro. Go on, go — it's nothing." "I'm not going anywhere," he says. He walks in. Switches the coffee machine on. "Want one? Thing gave me a decaf yesterday, but maybe today it'll behave." Marta almost laughs.

A Marta fala durante vinte minutos. O Pedro quase não diz nada. Não pergunta porquê. Não dá conselhos. Faz café, ouve, e de vez em quando diz: "Pois." Às vezes as pessoas não precisam de respostas. Precisam de alguém que não saia da sala. A Marta para de chorar. Bebe o café. Olha para ele. "Toda a gente sai às seis. Tu também sais sempre às seis. Porque é que não saíste hoje?" O Pedro pensa um momento. "Porque hoje não era dia de sair às seis."

Marta talks for twenty minutes. Pedro barely says a word. Doesn't ask why. Doesn't give advice. He makes coffee, listens, and every now and then says "Right." Sometimes people don't need answers. They just need someone who won't walk out of the room. Marta stops crying. Drinks the coffee. Looks at him. "Everyone leaves at six. You always leave at six too. Why didn't you leave today?" Pedro thinks about it for a second. "Because today wasn't a six o'clock day."

A Marta levanta-se. "Obrigada por não teres saído." O Pedro sorri. "Amanhã saio às seis outra vez. Hoje foi a exceção." Saem os dois do edifício juntos. O Sr. Valente olha para ele por cima do jornal. "Sais mais tarde hoje, Pedro? Isso é novidade." "Tudo tem de começar por algum lado, Sr. Valente." Lá fora, o sol já se pôs. O Pedro olha para o relógio — sete da tarde. Ainda é cedo, pensa ele. Para o que importa, ainda é cedo.

Marta gets up. "Thank you for not leaving." Pedro smiles. "Tomorrow I'll be out the door at six again. Today was the exception." They walk out of the building together. Sr. Valente peers at him over his newspaper. "Leaving late today, Pedro? That's a first." "Everything's got to start somewhere, Sr. Valente." Outside, the sun's gone down. Pedro checks his watch — seven o'clock. Still early, he thinks. For what matters, still early.
