O Primeiro Dia de Inês

Levo a Inês à escola às oito e meia. Tem seis anos. Não quer ir. Disse-mo ao pequeno-almoço, disse-mo no carro, e está a dizer-mo outra vez agora, de pé no passeio em frente à escola com os braços cruzados. "Não quero ir, pai." "Eu sei." "Então porque é que me levas?" Não tenho uma boa resposta. Pego-lhe na mão e caminhamos até ao portão. A mão dela é pequena e quente e está a apertar a minha com tanta força que quase dói.

I take Inês to school at half past eight. She's six. She doesn't want to go. She told me this at breakfast, she told me in the car, and she's telling me again now, standing on the pavement outside the school with her arms crossed. "I don't want to go, Pai." "I know." "Then why are you taking me?" I don't have a good answer. I take her hand and we walk towards the gate. Her hand is small and warm and she's squeezing mine so hard it almost hurts.

A escola é nova. Janelas grandes, tinta viva, um recreio com um escorrega em forma de foguetão. Outros pais levam os filhos à porta. Algumas crianças choram. Outras entram a correr sem olhar para trás. As mães abraçam-se umas às outras. Os pais ficam ali parados, com as mãos nos bolsos, sem saber o que fazer. Levo a mochila da Inês porque ela diz que é muito pesada. Não é pesada. Levo-a porque quero ter alguma coisa nas mãos.

The school is new. Big windows, bright paint, a playground with a slide shaped like a rocket. Other parents take their children to the door. Some children cry. Others run in without looking back. The mothers hug each other. The fathers stand there with their hands in their pockets, not sure what to do. I carry Inês's backpack because she says it's too heavy. It's not heavy. I carry it because I want something to hold.

"Pai, tu levas a mochila lá para dentro também?" "Não, querida. Tu levas a mochila lá para dentro. Eu levo-te à porta." "E depois?" "Depois tu entras." "Sozinha?" "Com as outras crianças." Ela olha para a porta. Está pintada de amarelo. Há uma professora à porta com um crachá e um sorriso. "Ela parece simpática", diz a Inês. "Parece." "Levo a lancheira ou a escola dá-me almoço?" "Levas a lancheira. Está dentro da mochila." "A mochila que tu levas." "A mochila que eu levo, sim."

"Pai, do you take the backpack inside too?" "No, love. You take the backpack inside. I take you to the door." "And then?" "Then you go in." "Alone?" "With the other children." She looks at the door. It's painted yellow. There's a teacher standing there with a name tag and a smile. "She looks nice," says Inês. "She does." "Do I take my lunch box or does the school give me lunch?" "You take your lunch box. It's in the backpack." "The backpack you're carrying." "The backpack I'm carrying, yes."

Chegamos à porta. A professora baixa-se. "E como te chamas?" "Inês." "Bem-vinda, Inês. Queres entrar?" A Inês olha para mim. Aceno que sim. Ela não se mexe. A professora espera. Eu espero. Um rapaz atrás de nós passa à frente com a mãe, que está a chorar mais do que ele. A Inês olha para eles. "Pai, aquela mãe está a chorar." "Está." "Tu vais chorar?" "Não." É mentira. Mas ela ainda não precisa de saber disso.

We reach the door. The teacher bends down. "And what's your name?" "Inês." "Welcome, Inês. Do you want to come in?" Inês looks at me. I nod. She doesn't move. The teacher waits. I wait. A boy behind us pushes past with his mother, who's crying more than he is. Inês watches them. "Pai, that mother is crying." "Yes." "Are you going to cry?" "No." That's a lie. But she doesn't need to know that yet.

Ajoelho-me e ponho-lhe a mochila nos ombros. Ajusto as alças. Arrumo-lhe o cabelo atrás da orelha, como a mãe dela faz. "Vai correr tudo bem", digo. Ela olha para mim com aqueles olhos castanhos — os olhos da mãe — e não diz nada. Depois faz uma coisa que eu não estava à espera. Larga-me a mão. Não devagar. Não com um adeus. Simplesmente abre os dedos e entra pela porta amarela. Não olha para trás. Fico ali com uma mão vazia e um nó na garganta.

I kneel down and put the backpack on her shoulders. I adjust the straps. I fix her hair behind her ear, the way her mother does. "You're going to be fine," I say. She looks at me with those brown eyes — her mother's eyes — and says nothing. Then she does something I wasn't expecting. She lets go of my hand. Not slowly. Not with a goodbye. She just opens her fingers and walks through the yellow door. She doesn't look back. I stand there with an empty hand and a full throat.

Volto para o carro. A mochila já não está, a mão já não está. O passeio parece mais comprido do que há cinco minutos. Sento-me ao volante e não ligo o motor. Penso no caminho do carro até à escola. Levei a mochila. Levei-a pela mão. Pensava que era eu que a levava. Mas foi ela que largou a mão primeiro. Foi ela que entrou pela porta sozinha. Se calhar foi ela que me levou a mim até ali, e não o contrário. Respiro fundo, ligo o carro e levo-me a mim para casa. A casa está silenciosa. A tigela dos cereais dela ainda está em cima da mesa.

I walk back to the car. The backpack is gone, the hand is gone. The pavement feels longer than it did five minutes ago. I sit behind the wheel and don't start the engine. I think about the walk from the car to the school. I carried the backpack. I held her hand. I thought I was taking her. But she let go first. She walked through the door on her own. Maybe it was her who took me here, not the other way round. I take a breath, start the car, and take myself home. The house is quiet. Her cereal bowl is still on the table.
