O Dragão da Serra

Leonor tem oito anos e vai com os pais passar o fim de semana à Serra da Estrela. No sábado de manhã, enquanto os pais dormem, ela sai para explorar os rochedos. Atrás de uma pedra grande, encontra um dragão pequeno. É verde, tem olhos cor de mel e não é maior do que um gato.

Leonor is eight years old and goes with her parents to spend the weekend at Serra da Estrela. On Saturday morning, while her parents are sleeping, she goes out to explore the rocks. Behind a large stone, she finds a small dragon. It is green, has honey-coloured eyes and is no bigger than a cat.

O dragão olha para ela e diz: "Bom dia." Leonor fica admirada. "Falas português!" diz ela. "Sim," responde o dragão. "Só sei falar português. É a língua mais bonita que existe." Leonor concorda.

The dragon looks at her and says: "Good morning." Leonor is amazed. "You speak Portuguese!" she says. "Yes," the dragon replies. "I only know how to speak Portuguese. It is the most beautiful language there is." Leonor agrees.

Os dois ficam amigos. Leonor ensina o dragão a dizer "até logo" e "com licença". O dragão ensina Leonor onde estão as melhores amoras da serra. Passam a manhã toda juntos.

The two become friends. Leonor teaches the dragon to say "goodbye for now" and "excuse me". The dragon teaches Leonor where the best blackberries on the mountain are. They spend the whole morning together.

No outono, o dragão desaparece. Leonor fica triste, mas encontra uma pena verde no lugar onde ele costumava dormir. Guarda-a no seu quarto. Todos os anos, em dezembro, fala português um bocadinho melhor. E pensa que talvez seja por isso.

In autumn, the dragon disappears. Leonor is sad, but she finds a green feather in the place where he used to sleep. She keeps it in her room. Every year, in December, she speaks Portuguese a little better. And she thinks that perhaps it is because of that.
