Os Sem Nome do Alentejo

Henrique Santos reivindicara durante toda a carreira académica a centralidade dos trabalhadores rurais do Alentejo na história do século XX português. Era uma reivindicação que colidia com a narrativa dominante, centrada nas cidades e nas elites políticas, e que exigia fontes que a historiografia tradicional não valorizava: testemunhos orais, registos paroquiais, fotografias de família, a memória dos corpos que tinham trabalhado a terra. Reivindicar a história dos sem nome era, antes de tudo, uma questão metodológica — o quê se usa como evidência define quem existe na história — mas era também uma questão ética que punha em causa a neutralidade que a academia frequentemente se atribuía a si própria.

Henrique Santos had spent his entire academic career reclaiming the centrality of rural workers in the Alentejo in twentieth-century Portuguese history. It was a claim that collided with the dominant narrative, centred on cities and political elites, and that required sources which traditional historiography did not value: oral testimonies, parish records, family photographs, the memory of bodies that had worked the land. Reclaiming the history of the nameless was, above all, a methodological question — what is used as evidence defines who exists in history — but it was also an ethical question that called into question the neutrality that academia frequently attributed to itself.

O projeto mais ambicioso de Henrique era um arquivo digital de testemunhos de trabalhadores rurais alentejanos com mais de oitenta anos. Reivindicar a sua memória antes que desaparecesse era urgente. Percorreu vinte e dois concelhos, gravou mais de trezentos testemunhos, transcreveu dialectos que poucos académicos ainda reconheciam. O que encontrou não era apenas história agrária — era uma forma de vida, uma epistemologia, uma relação com o tempo e com a terra que a modernização tinha varrido sem reivindicar nem o que perdia nem o que ganhava. A pressa do progresso raramente se dá ao trabalho de reivindicar o que destrói.

Henrique's most ambitious project was a digital archive of testimonies from Alentejo rural workers aged over eighty. Reclaiming their memory before it disappeared was urgent. He visited twenty-two municipalities, recorded over three hundred testimonies, transcribed dialects that few academics still recognised. What he found was not merely agrarian history — it was a way of life, an epistemology, a relationship with time and with the land that modernisation had swept away without reclaiming either what it lost or what it gained. The rush of progress rarely troubles itself to reclaim what it destroys.
