Horror stories in European Portuguese

5 stories from A1 to C1

Horror stories, one at each level from A1 to C1. At A1, nine-year-old Pedro opens the door his grandmother has always told the grandchildren never to open. At A2, Marta sees a tall figure in a window across the street in Príncipe Real, always at two in the morning, always in the same place.

At B1, a history student working late in Coimbra's eighteenth-century library hears footsteps on the floor above, in a building with no second floor. At B2, Ana goes back to the house in Cascais where she grew up and finds that it no longer matches her memories. At C1, a doctor on the night shift at the Hospital de Santa Maria treats a patient whose symptoms match those of a man with the same name who died in 1987.

Because there is one per level, they make a good test of progress: read the A1 story now and the C1 one when you get there. Start with A Porta Proibida.

Each story page shows the opening in Portuguese with the English under every paragraph, and a glossary of key words. The whole story is in the reader, with audio for every sentence and tap-to-translate on every word.
