Acredita em Mim

Sofia herdou a casa da bisavó no verão em que fez trinta anos. Era uma vivenda antiga nos arredores de Sintra, com paredes de pedra e um jardim que ninguém tratava há décadas. A família nunca acreditara muito naquela propriedade — demasiado velha, demasiado isolada, demasiado cheia de histórias que ninguém queria contar. Mas Sofia acreditava que lugares velhos tinham memória, e foi por isso que foi.

Sofia inherited her great-grandmother's house in the summer she turned thirty. It was an old villa on the outskirts of Sintra, with stone walls and a garden that no one had tended for decades. The family had never believed much in that property — too old, too isolated, too full of stories no one wanted to tell. But Sofia believed that old places had memory, and that was why she went.

She found the house covered in dust and silence. The windows were shut, the furniture covered with white sheets. On the first floor, in a room full of boxes, she found a dark wooden chest. Inside the chest were books, folded letters and a diary with a black leather cover. She immediately believed there was something important there.

O diário pertencia a uma mulher chamada Elvira, que vivera na casa entre 1940 e 1957. A caligrafia era pequena e inclinada. Sofia sentou-se no chão e começou a ler. Elvira escrevia sobre a guerra, sobre a ditadura, sobre um homem que a visitava de noite quando o marido estava fora. E acreditava — escrevia ela — que esse homem sabia de algo que a podia destruir.

The diary belonged to a woman called Elvira, who had lived in the house between 1940 and 1957. The handwriting was small and slanted. Sofia sat on the floor and began to read. Elvira wrote about the war, about the dictatorship, about a man who visited her at night when her husband was away. And she believed — she wrote — that this man knew something that could destroy her.

— Não acredito que isto seja real — disse Sofia em voz alta, para ninguém. Mas continuou a ler. Elvira descrevia documentos que tinha escondido — documentos que provavam ligações entre figuras da ditadura e negócios ilegais. Acreditava que a sua vida estava em perigo. Na última entrada do diário, escreveu apenas: «Acredito que não voltarei a escrever aqui. Se alguém encontrar isto, que acredite no que está escrito.»

"I cannot believe this is real," Sofia said aloud, to no one. But she kept reading. Elvira described documents she had hidden — documents that proved connections between figures of the dictatorship and illegal businesses. She believed her life was in danger. In the last diary entry, she wrote only: "I believe I will not write here again. If anyone finds this, let them believe what is written."

Sofia fechou o diário e ficou em silêncio. Devia acreditar nisto? Era a história de uma mulher que havia morrido há mais de sessenta anos. Podia ser uma fantasia, um romance que nunca publicara. Mas havia algo na caligrafia urgente, na forma como as palavras se amontoavam no papel, que a fazia acreditar que era verdade.

Sofia closed the diary and sat in silence. Should she believe this? It was the story of a woman who had died more than sixty years ago. It could be a fantasy, a novel she had never published. But there was something in the urgent handwriting, in the way the words crowded together on the paper, that made her believe it was true.

"Bring it to me," he said. "But first photograph everything." Sofia spent the following afternoon photographing every page. As she did so, she believed Elvira's story more and more — not because she wanted to, but because the details were too precise to be invented.

Enquanto fotografava, encontrou no fundo do baú um envelope selado. Dentro havia seis fotografias a preto e branco e um papel dobrado com uma lista de nomes e quantias em dinheiro. Gonçalo, quando viu as fotografias, ficou pálido. — Acreditas no que estou a ver? — disse ele, quase em voz baixa. — Este homem aqui era um ministro do regime. E este outro era dono de metade dos caminhos de ferro do país.

While photographing, she found at the bottom of the chest a sealed envelope. Inside were six black-and-white photographs and a folded paper with a list of names and sums of money. Gonçalo, when he saw the photographs, went pale. "Can you believe what I am seeing?" he said, almost in a whisper. "This man here was a minister of the regime. And this other one owned half the railways in the country."

— Acreditas que estes documentos são autênticos? — perguntou Sofia. Gonçalo examinou o papel. — É preciso mandar analisar. Mas acredito que sim. A qualidade do papel, a tinta, o formato — tudo aponta para 1950. Se for verdade, isto muda o que acreditávamos saber sobre esse período. Sofia sentiu o peso daquilo que tinha encontrado. "Do you believe these documents are authentic?" Sofia asked. Gonçalo examined the paper. "They need to be sent for analysis. But I believe so. The quality of the paper, the ink, the format — everything points to 1950. If this is true, it changes what we believed we knew about that period." Sofia felt the weight of what she had found. A woman dead for sixty years had believed that the truth should survive.

Durante os meses que se seguiram, Sofia e Gonçalo trabalharam com historiadores e com o Arquivo Nacional. Havia quem não acreditasse na autenticidade dos documentos — era mais fácil não acreditar. Mas a análise forense confirmou as datas. Sofia acreditava que Elvira tinha arriscado a vida para guardar aquela prova. E acreditava que tinha a obrigação de não deixar essa coragem ser desperdiçada.

During the months that followed, Sofia and Gonçalo worked with historians and the National Archive. There were those who did not believe in the authenticity of the documents — it was easier not to believe. But the forensic analysis confirmed the dates. Sofia believed that Elvira had risked her life to keep that evidence. And she believed she had an obligation not to let that courage go to waste.

Um jornal nacional publicou a história. A reação foi imediata: alguns acreditavam, outros acusavam de falsificação. Numa tarde de novembro, Sofia voltou à casa de Sintra, agora com as janelas abertas e o jardim começado a tratar. Sentou-se no mesmo chão onde encontrara o diário. — Acredito em ti, Elvira — disse em voz baixa. E ficou ali um momento, acreditando que as palavras chegavam a algum lado.

A national newspaper published the story. The reaction was immediate: some believed, others accused them of forgery. One November afternoon, Sofia returned to the Sintra house, now with the windows open and the garden beginning to be tended. She sat on the same floor where she had found the diary. "I believe you, Elvira," she said softly. And she stayed there for a moment, believing that the words reached somewhere.

O que Sofia aprendeu naquele verão foi que acreditar é, muitas vezes, um ato de coragem. É mais fácil não acreditar — duvida-se, ignora-se, passa-se à frente. Mas Elvira acreditara que a verdade valia o risco. E Sofia, ao encontrar o diário, tinha acreditado no mesmo. Às vezes basta uma pessoa acreditar para que algo não se perca para sempre.

What Sofia learned that summer was that believing is, very often, an act of courage. It is easier not to believe — to doubt, ignore, move on. But Elvira had believed that the truth was worth the risk. And Sofia, upon finding the diary, had believed the same. Sometimes it only takes one person to believe for something not to be lost forever.
