Story opening — Portuguese with English Translation

Mariana lê muito. Lê no metro, lê nos cafés, lê na cama antes de dormir. A sua mãe diz: "Lês demasiado!" O pai diz: "Deixa-a ler — ler é bom." Mariana não discute. Pega no livro e lê.

Mariana reads a lot. She reads on the metro, she reads in cafés, she reads in bed before sleeping. Her mother says: "You read too much!" Her father says: "Leave her be — reading is good." Mariana doesn't argue. She picks up her book and reads.

Hoje está a ler um livro de José Saramago. É difícil — Saramago não usa muita pontuação e as frases são longas. "Lês Saramago?!", diz a amiga Catarina. "Lês e percebes?" "Leio devagar", diz Mariana. "Quando leio devagar, percebo tudo."

Today she is reading a book by José Saramago. It's difficult — Saramago doesn't use much punctuation and the sentences are long. "You read Saramago?!" says her friend Catarina. "You read it and you understand it?" "I read slowly," says Mariana. "When I read slowly, I understand everything."
