Rita Ouve Fado

Rita ouve música o dia todo. Ouve no metro a caminho do trabalho, ouve enquanto cozinha, ouve enquanto limpa a casa. Os vizinhos ouvem às vezes — mas nunca se queixam. "O que ouves sempre?", pergunta a amiga Leonor. "Ouço muita coisa", diz Rita. "Mas quando estou triste, ouço fado."

Rita listens to music all day. She listens on the metro on the way to work, she listens while she cooks, she listens while she cleans the house. The neighbours sometimes hear — but they never complain. "What do you always listen to?" asks her friend Leonor. "I listen to many things," says Rita. "But when I'm sad, I listen to fado."

"Nunca ouvi fado", diz Leonor. "Ouves e não gostas, ou nunca ouviste mesmo?" "Nunca ouvi", diz Leonor. "Achas estranho?" Rita pensa. "Acho. Em Portugal, toda a gente ouve fado. Ouve-se na rádio, ouve-se nos restaurantes, ouve-se nas festas. Está em todo o lado."

"I've never listened to fado," says Leonor. "Have you listened and not liked it, or have you truly never heard it?" "I've never heard it," says Leonor. "Do you think that's strange?" Rita thinks. "I do. In Portugal, everyone listens to fado. You hear it on the radio, in restaurants, at parties. It's everywhere."

Naquela tarde, Rita põe fado a tocar. "Ouve", diz ela. Leonor fecha os olhos e ouve. É a voz de Amália Rodrigues — uma voz velha mas viva. Quando a música acaba, Leonor está em silêncio. "Nunca pensei que ia gostar assim", diz ela. Rita sorri. "Toda a gente percebe, quando ouve de verdade."

That afternoon, Rita puts fado on. "Listen," she says. Leonor closes her eyes and listens. It is the voice of Amália Rodrigues — an old but living voice. When the music ends, Leonor is silent. "I never thought I would like it this much," she says. Rita smiles. "Everyone understands, when they truly listen."
