O Regresso

Filipa tinha partido de Braga aos vinte e dois anos, cheia de ambição. Dez anos depois, voltava — não por derrota, mas por escolha. Londres tinha-lhe dado uma carreira, mas retirado algo difícil de definir.

Filipa had left Braga at twenty-two, full of ambition. Ten years later, she was returning — not out of defeat, but by choice. London had given her a career, but taken something hard to define.

A cidade tinha mudado. Havia novos cafés no centro histórico. Mas o Jardim de Santa Bárbara continuava igual. Ela voltou ao jardim no primeiro dia — era ali que costumava encontrar-se com Rui.

The city had changed. There were new cafés in the historic centre. But the Santa Bárbara Garden remained the same. She returned to the garden on the first day — it was there that she used to meet Rui.

Rui estava sentado no mesmo banco onde se costumavam sentar. Quando a viu, ficou imóvel por um momento. Depois sorriu — o mesmo sorriso que ela não tinha conseguido esquecer. "Voltaste," disse ele.

Rui was sitting on the same bench where they used to sit. When he saw her, he was still for a moment. Then he smiled — the same smile she had not been able to forget. "You came back," he said.

"Voltei," respondeu ela. Sentou-se ao lado dele. Havia dez anos de distância entre eles, mas no jardim, naquele momento, a distância parecia não existir. Às vezes é preciso voltar para descobrir o que se deixou para trás.

"I came back," she replied. She sat down next to him. There were ten years of distance between them, but in the garden, in that moment, the distance seemed not to exist. Sometimes one must return to discover what was left behind.
