Vera Santos was thirty-five, a science teacher at a secondary school in Cascais, and had been running for seven years. She was not a professional athlete — she continued to work as a teacher and trained before lessons, early in the morning, on the streets by the sea. Her dream was to complete the Lisbon Marathon, which continued to be a goal yet to be achieved.

In March, ten weeks before the marathon, Vera felt a sharp pain in her right knee during training. She stopped, rested, but the pain continued the next day and the day after. The doctor diagnosed a meniscus injury — not serious, but requiring four to six weeks of rest.

— Posso continuar a treinar?

"Can I continue training?" she asked the doctor, already knowing the answer. "You can continue walking and doing physiotherapy," said the doctor. "But continuing to run now risks a much more serious injury. The marathon can continue in the calendar for next year."

Vera left the appointment with her head full of thoughts. She had continued preparing for that marathon for six months. She continued to wake at five in the morning three times a week. She could not imagine stopping.

The physiotherapist was called Joana and was a practical, direct woman. On the first day of physiotherapy, she said: "Vera, you can continue dreaming about the marathon. But you have to continue in a different way during these weeks. The body continues to train even without running — in the pool, at the gym, on the exercise bike."

Vera began swimming in the mornings. At first it was frustrating — she continued to want to run, she continued to see other runners through the gym window. But gradually she realised her body continued to grow stronger in different ways.

Five weeks later, Joana gave her clearance to start running again, slowly. Vera cried with joy in the car after the session. She had continued to believe — and that had mattered more than the physical training.

O corpo lembrava.

On the day of the Lisbon Marathon, Vera was at the starting line in Cascais with ten thousand other runners. The sea was blue and there was a cold wind. Vera continued to feel her knee — not with pain, but with awareness. The body remembers.

The route continued along the coast and entered Lisbon via the Avenida Marginal. At thirty kilometres, Vera continued to run, more slowly than she wanted but still running. She thought of Joana, the doctor, the mornings in the pool.

When she crossed the finish line at Parque das Nações, Vera stopped and knelt on the ground for a moment. Not in pain — in relief and gratitude. She had continued when everything told her to stop. She had continued in different ways, but she had continued.

That evening, on the phone with her mother, Vera said simply: "I continued." And that was enough. Sometimes continuing doesn't mean never stopping. It means starting again. We all need to learn to continue in different ways — because life always continues, even when it seems it doesn't.
