Three questions from this test

Try them first. Each answer stays hidden until you open it.

  1. EP vs BP

Which sentence correctly uses the EP clitic placement rule at the start of a clause?

    • AMe deu o livro.
    • BDeu-me o livro.
    • CDeu me o livro.
    • DMe deu-o livro.
    Show the answer

    B. Deu-me o livro. European Portuguese default is enclisis (clitic after the verb): "Deu-me". Proclisis (clitic before the verb, "me deu") is the Brazilian Portuguese default and is avoided at the start of a sentence in EP.

  2. Fill in the Blank

Eles saíram sem ___ nada. (They left without saying anything.) [personal infinitive]

    • Adizerem
    • Bdizer
    • Cdizendo
    • Ddito
    Show the answer

    A. dizerem The personal infinitive is used after prepositions when the subject of the infinitive is explicit. "Sem dizerem" = without them saying. "Dizerem" (3rd person plural personal infinitive) agrees with the subject "eles".

  3. Error Spotting

Find the word that is incorrect: "Me telefona logo que chegares a casa."

    • AMe
    • Btelefona
    • Cchegares
    • Dcasa
    Show the answer

    A. Me In European Portuguese, a clitic cannot begin a sentence or clause. "Me telefona" at the start is incorrect; it should be "Telefona-me" (enclisis). EP requires the clitic after the verb when there is no proclisis trigger.
