Greetings are the gateway to every conversation in Portugal. Portuguese people tend to be formal with strangers and warm with friends, so knowing both registers is important from day one.

In PT-PT, "se faz favor" is just as common as "por favor" when ordering in a café or shop. You will hear it constantly in Lisbon and Porto.
