A Maia não dormia há trinta e uma horas, e já estava a ter conversas com os parafusos do painel de controlo. Eram catorze. Tinha-lhes dado nomes a todos durante a primeira semana da rotação, quando ainda achava que o turno da noite era temporário. Isso foi há cinco meses. O preferido era o Augusto, canto superior esquerdo, ligeiramente torto. O Augusto percebia-a. A Cassiopeia era um cargueiro — velho, lento, mantido de pé pelo hábito e pela ferrugem — do tipo que deixaram de fabricar em 2061, depois de três se terem desfeito perto de Júpiter. O capitão Soares gostava de dizer: "Ela não é bonita, mas chega lá." A Maia gostava de responder: "Um caixão também." O Soares nunca se ria dessa.

Maia hadn't slept in thirty-one hours, and she was starting to have conversations with the screws on the dashboard. There were fourteen of them. She'd named them all during the first week of the rotation, back when she still thought the night shift would be temporary. That was five months ago. Her favourite was Augusto, top left, slightly crooked. Augusto understood her. The Cassiopeia was a cargo ship — old, slow, held together by habit and rust — the kind they stopped making in 2061 after three of them broke apart near Jupiter. Captain Soares liked to say: "She's not pretty, but she gets there." Maia liked to reply: "So does a coffin." Soares never laughed at that one.

Trezentas toneladas de minério de titânio no porão e uma rota que os levava à volta dos anéis de Saturno de seis em seis semanas. O trabalho dela era simples: vigiar os ecrãs, proteger a carga, manter a nave no rumo. Ninguém lhe disse o que fazer quando o sensor de movimento do Piso C disparou três vezes numa hora. O Piso C era o porão. Ninguém ia ao porão durante o turno da noite. Ninguém tinha razão para ir.
